Story Behind the Painting: As one of the main attractions inside the Arboretum & Botanical Gardens in Overland Park, Kansas, I knew I wanted to spend extra time immersing myself in this area, inspired by Monet's garden in Giverny, France. I spent hours viewing the garden from various perspectives, and when it came time to paint Monet's Garden, I chose this particular scene. I loved the way the light was just beginning to peak over the ridge behind me. It felt like things were just beginning, but simultaneously, because of the shifting light, I knew that what I saw and experienced at that moment would soon be gone, and something else would come. It was these fleeting, transitional moments that first captured my attention and inspired me to paint this stunning place.

Story Behind the Painting: While walking through the Arboretum & Botanical Gardens in Overland Park, Kansas, I found myself in the Dickinson Garden early in the morning. I loved the shadows as they moved along my walking path. They seemed to add to the contemplative experience invoked by the garden's beauty. The park benches scattered along the path enhanced the sense of calm and reflection. As I was painting this piece, my goal was to capture the same emotions I had felt during that peaceful time in the gardens.

Story Behind the Painting: Beyond Telluride, CO, lies a road known as the Last Dollar Road. As I drove along the lonely, winding road, I was struck by the expansive openness around me. While painting this piece, I sought to capture the feelings and reflections I experienced on that drive. Although the painting is not large, I wanted the piece to convey a sense that there is far more to the scene than what initially appears.

Story Behind the Painting: Inspired by the Flint Hills of Kansas—a place I've visited many times—this particular outing drew me in with the vast openness of the landscape. At first, it felt so simple, yet with that simplicity, there was great expanse. The beauty wasn't just in what I could see, but in the layered experience it stirred within me. I was intrigued by the complexity hidden inside the simplicity. Wanting to reflect those multiple layers of perception, I set out to bring that same multifaceted quality into the painting experience.

Story Behind the Painting: I first noticed this small stream while standing at the edge of a park near my home in Colorado. What drew me in was how easily it could go unnoticed—almost hidden from the casual observer—which only deepened its sense of mystery. I hadn't been searching for anything in particular on my walk, yet stumbling upon this scene immediately captured my attention. The more I looked, the more layers I began to see. I was struck by how nature could compose something so complete within such a small space, and I knew I wanted to capture on canvas the emotions it stirred in me. It was the delicate balance of intricate detail and quiet simplicity that made the moment unforgettable.

Story Behind the Painting: When I came upon this tree, its fullness and complexity immediately caught my attention, and I knew I wanted to explore it through the lens of the color green. My goal was to use green as the primary visual approach, revealing its multifaceted and depthful qualities. At first glance, you see a green tree—but with closer observation, subtle shifts, variations, and even unexpected colors begin to emerge. Green itself carries the essence of life, and as I explored its richness, the title for the piece became clear, reflecting that sense of fullness and vitality.

While I knew activity was happening somewhere beyond my view, what I encountered felt like a quiet, unhurried slice of life. It was just before sunset, and a soft glow touched the landscape, adding warmth to the moment. In this painting, I wanted to capture the same sense of stillness and gentle beauty that I felt that day.

Story Behind the Painting: A Kansas storm was unfolding when I came upon this scene, and what struck me was the contrast in perspective. I was ahead of the storm, standing in a dry place, yet just behind me, the rain was falling hard. I paused my car to take it in, and as I looked back, I felt for the driver behind me—so close to escaping the downpour yet still caught in it. I knew it was only a matter of time before the storm reached me too. When painting this piece, I wanted to capture that tension—the feeling of trying to outrun a storm, only to realize that sometimes you can't. In the end, there's a moment of acceptance: Here it comes, and the only way through is to face it.

Story Behind the Painting: This group of aspens caught my attention because it seemed to have all the freedom in the world to grow and expand as it pleased. Even though the foliage surrounded the aspens, it wasn't so overbearing that it choked the life out of them. These aspens and everything around them were alive. It was as if each plant was getting along and free to express itself without crowding out the others. As I painted, I wanted to capture that same sense of freedom and balance that I felt when I saw this scene.

Story Behind the Painting: These apples were from Gieringer's Family Farm near Edgerton, Kansas. As I was driving through the area, I noticed the orchard sign and decided to stop and see what I might find. I’m so glad I did as I wasn’t disappointed. The farm was full of people picking fresh apples to take home, and there was a wonderful sense of excitement and freshness in the air. I wanted to capture that same feeling in my painting—the joy, the energy, and the simple delight of the moment. Taking the time to stop was well worth it, and the apples were absolutely delicious.

Story Behind the Painting: I was enjoying a fall drive in southern Colorado when I saw these four horses grazing in the pasture. The sun felt good, and the atmosphere seemed right. It was simply a pleasant happenstance at the time. What captured my attention even more was the way the horses seemed to be enjoying all that grass. From their perspective, there appeared to be no lack of anything—their needs were fully met, and they were simply living in quiet abundance.

Story Behind the Painting: Snow had just fallen, and the sun was beginning to peek through, trying to bring a bit of warmth to the day. I was struck by those contrasting sensations—the chill of the snow and the promise of the sun’s warmth—and it was that very contrast that inspired this painting. I wanted this painting to capture the same initial impression I had at the time, which was of the feeling of the cold snow and the warmth of the sun.

Story Behind the Painting: The title for this painting came to me before any paint ever touched the canvas. When I first saw this group of sunflowers together, I liked how nature seemed to arrange these in its own way. Consequently, it was the natural arrangement and configuration of the sunflowers that inspired this painting. I felt like nature did it best, so it seemed obvious to title it "Nature's bouquet."

Story Behind the Painting: I was first drawn to these cattails by the rhythm of the reeds. Each reed is entirely different, but at the same time, they work together to create regularity and progression. It is almost like an orchestra, with several different instruments working together to create a beautiful, harmonious sound. My hope was to reflect in this painting the very things that initially caught my eye and drew me into the setting.

Story Behind the Painting: When I saw these two horses on a foggy morning, I felt an immediate sense of calm and serenity—feelings I wanted to capture in this painting. The scene was peaceful and still, the horses quietly going about their morning. But when I approached the fence, one hors lifted its head and noticed me, adding a subtle sense of alertness to the otherwise tranquil moment. Rather than breaking the calm, it somehow deepened it. I wanted to translate those gentle, layered emotions into this painting.

Story Behind the Painting: I was driving along this quiet road when these aspens suddenly engulfed me. Their golden leaves formed a canopy overhead, and it felt like I was being wrapped in pure color. It was so beautiful—so mesmerizing—that I knew I had to paint what I was experiencing right then. The light, the color, the abundance of the trees and leaves—it was almost overwhelming in the best way. I didn’t just feel surrounded by nature; I felt embraced by the colors of the moment.

Story Behind the Painting: There’s something unique about the atmosphere of night, and this nocturnal scene of sheep in a moonlit field captures that tone perfectly. Interestingly, sheep rarely graze after dark—but these seemed unusually hungry, or perhaps just in the mood for a late-night snack. What first caught my attention was the quiet simplicity of the composition: three sheep scattered across a still pasture under a soft, silvery sky. In the darkness, only faint shapes are visible, gently illuminated by moonlight. Even my signature is subtly “ghosted” into the bottom right corner—intentionally understated to preserve the tranquil mood of the painting.

Story Behind the Painting: This painting is more of a high-key painting, which means the values are lighter, rather than a lower-key painting, where the values are darker. The house structure is located at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in the Flint Hills of Kansas. When I saw this, it was a sunny day and very bright, but the sun wasn't so overpowering that it "blinded" my eyes. There was a softness to the light that I wanted to bring into this painting so that it quietly said everything that it needed to say.
